Split, Croatia - Waaaay prettier than we expected

This is another throwback post to tide us over until the post-employment adventures begin. In 2010 we went on a Mediterranean cruise with friends that started in Venice, hopped around the Mediterranean to several islands and landed in Greece. One of the way points, which we did not think would be very exciting, was Split, Croatia. First, if you are not familiar with it, you have to look at a map of Croatia - it is so oddly shaped. Especially the narrow sliver that includes Split (see below), where there is a tall mountain range shoved up against just enough land for cities/towns/ports. That geography generated the super gorgeous views from the cruise ship that we fell in love with in the main photo.

(Per Wikipedia) The beginnings of Split are traditionally associated with the construction of Diocletian’s Palace in 305 CE (though it was a Greek colony several centuries earlier). Diocletian was Emperor of Rome from 284 BCE until his abdication in 305 - see the reconstruction drawing in the gallery below with some photos of our visit. The most interesting part of the palace ruins was that the city grew up in and around it - see the right most photo, with modern shops inside the ruins.

The best thing we did in Split, though, was the local wine tasting at a family owned taverna. The wines were not the best we had ever tasted, but the pairings with specific foods were brilliant and a big learning experience for us.
