Before we get to Hawaii…..
The first thing to know about my (our?) retirement is that, apparently, I can no longer
keep track of day of the week. I have no idea (yay!). I’m not sure I need to know anymore 😱, but it’s very weird. The second thing to know is that this is definitely still SURREAL and we are just not quite sure what is going on in our lives.
Having said that, here’s how it started. First, we enjoyed these two bottles of wine as our initial celebration, both from wineries that won the Judgement of Paris (again, see Bottle Shock and Wikipedia), and are wines we managed to keep for awhile, which is definitely not our standard MO.

Next, one of our dear friends gave us a going away present - dinner at Sushi by Scratch, a Michelin rated restaurant in Encino (and other locations!. The place has a hidden speakeasy vibe - the windows are papered over, the entrance takes you into a dimly lit bar with dark/heavy furniture and jazz playing in the background. When it’s time to go to the sushi bar, they take you through the kitchen to a door that says “Do Not Enter” and the hostess has to knock to get the ok to send you in. It was a lot of drama and I loved it.
The dinner was a 17 course Omakase prepared while we watched, served one item at a time on slate dishes in front of each of us. The whole process was interesting - the sou chef would start the items, hand them off to the sushi chef for finishing, including brushing with various sauces, adding the last tasty bits on top and occasionally, my favorite, FIRE.
There were also several options for alcohol pairings with the courses. Craig chose the full sake pairing and I chose the mixed pairings, which included 3 sakes, 2 micro-cocktails and one beer (served in a box cup!). It was so weird that they had a full bar in the small space in addition to everything else.
The next day - off to Hawaii!
